At 30 June, 2016:

  • Nine in ten (90% or 9,534 prisoners) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners were male. Similarly, for the non-Indigenous prisoner population, just over nine in ten prisoners were male (93% or 26,190 prisoners). (Table 20)
  • The most common offences/charges for male and female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners were:
    • acts intended to cause injury (34% or 3,203 prisoners, and 31% or 330 prisoners, respectively); and
    • unlawful entry with intent (15% or 1,455 prisoners and 15% or 154 prisoners, respectively).
  • For male non-Indigenous prisoners, the most common offences/charges were acts intended to cause injury and illicit drugs (both 17% or 4,566 and 4,400 prisoners, respectively) followed by sexual assault and related offences (13% or 3,502).
  • For over a quarter of non-Indigenous females, their offence/charge was illicit drugs (26% or 531 prisoners). (Table 4)
